Contact your State Representative to Oppose House Bill 4368!

State House Introduces 2% Tax on Services

Governor Granholm’s tax increase has also been introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives.  House Bill 4368, sponsored by Representative George Cushingberry (D-Detroit), calls for an increased tax on real estate commissions and other industry-related services.  This is MAR’s 2nd Call to Action in less than a week. House Bill 4368 is identical to Senate Bill 307, introduced March 1st in the Michigan Senate.

By the Governor's own estimates, only 6 states currently have a real estate service tax.  However, none of those states have an income tax, service tax, and transfer tax.  If this 2% tax on services were to pass, Michigan would be the only state to tax the real estate industry in all three ways.  This would only further depress Michigan’s real estate market by increasing the costs of purchasing a home or commercial property, and would price many potential buyers completely out of the market. The Michigan Association of REALTORS® and its over 32,000 members strongly oppose this 2% tax on services, a tax that would prove devastating to the real estate industry.

Please contact your State Representative and urge them to oppose House Bill 4368!  From our experience, your personalized communication over the phone is the most effective way to deliver your message. Otherwise, please send the attached letter.  To find contact information for your State Representative, please click on the Advocacy tab located at the top of this page, or check out www.house.mi.gov . We appreciate the thousands of members who took the time to contact their Senators.  Please make sure our communication efforts to House members are just as successful.  If you haven’t yet contacted your State Senator regarding Senate Bill 307, please do so as well!
