We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS.

The short explanation of this alert was:

113

The Cross County Connector is a proposed four-lane divided roadway intended to provide a safe and efficient east-west transportation link between Bryans Road and Waldorf.  The project has been a part of Charles County's Comprehensive Plan since 1990.  In addition to providing much needed relief from traffic congestion for workers and citizens in Southern Maryland, this road will offer a much safer and less expensive travel alternative to Billingsley Road.

Charles County taxpayers have already invested over $650,000 in studies at the request of State and Federal environmental review agencies.  These studies resulted in changes to the road design that will reduce the impact to wetlands from just under 14 acres to 7 acres, a 46% reduction in impact.  Now, the NIMBYs are attempting to delay this project another 2-3 years by urging the Army Corps. of Engineers to require an environmental impact statement (EIS) before to approving a nontidal wetlands permit that will allow the County to proceed with construction of the final phases of this much needed roadway.  An EIS will cost the County another $350,000!!!!  Is this a reasonable way to spend your tax dollars?

THE RECORD HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR COMMENTS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 15, 2008.

SEND YOUR LETTER OF SUPPORT TO STEVEN HARMAN OF THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TODAY!
